When I was seven, I told everyone I met that I wanted to be a writer when I grew up. (We had just done "Writers Workshop" at school, and I loved it. I think it reminded me of Santa's Workshop.) My Dad went to a yard sale and bought me a typewriter and told me I didn't have to wait until I grew up, I could be a writer today.
I wrote so many stories on that typewriter, but I wish I'd had access to publication the way kids do now! There are so many great opportunities for kids to see their names in print, to hold their own published novel, and even to make money selling their books.
Finishing a book is hard, but in our course we work on strategies that help kid's finish their manuscript, edit it, and then publish it. We chat together to keep each other going when writer's block hits, and in the end we all celebrate each other's victories and read each other's finished books!
Maybe it's that future author 7-year-old in me, but I love seeing kids accomplish something they never thought was possible. They gain so much confidence, and many of my students go on to write more books!
