Can Creative Writing Count as Language Arts?
Your kiddo loves creative writing, but can that really count as a Language Arts class? Is it enough?
I get this question all the time, and I wish I could shout from the rooftops: Not only does it count, in my opinion, it's the best kind of Language Arts. Especially for a child who already loves to write!
Let's face it, writing an essay is not fun for the majority of us, and diagramming sentences is about as boring as it gets, even for us Language Arts nerds out there! That's why I am so passionate about what we do in our courses. The first course is all about creative writing. We learn about creating dynamic characters, writing an engaging plot, how setting affects our stories, and even how to recognize theme and use it powerfully in your writing. We are flexing our creative muscles all while learning how to craft an amazing story. It's engaging, fun, and the best part is that in the end, you get to hold your finished, published book in your hand.
In the course, we talk about how it's important to get all the creative ideas out there in your first draft, and then we can switch on the left sides of our brains as we move into the editing phase. That is where creative writing becomes such a powerful tool for a really hands-on Language Arts course. Diagramming sentences suddenly makes sense when you are accepting changes your editor made to your manuscript.
In our courses, we're learning:
  • Creative Writing
  • Grammar and Punctuation
  • Cover Design
  • How to Publish a Book
  • Marketing
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Self-Confidence
and more, and we call it all Language Arts.
So, yeah, in my humble opinion, Creative Writing absolutely counts as Language Arts.
